Wednesday Proportion Test Preparation

On Friday you will have your first test of the year.  Tests are longer and more difficult than quizzes.  Please study hard.  Your test will have 2 parts, Multiply Divide and Fraction Warmup NO CALCULATOR, then a Ratio, Rate Proportion Test where you can use a calculator.  Please make sure you are playing Manga High and studying for this test.

Today's Warmup

We will continue to review tomorrow.

Greetings from Kelowna

Yesterday I ran the BMO Kelowna Marathon. It was a beautiful day and my time was 3:17.41(3 hours 17 minutes and 41 seconds).

If a Marathon is 42 kilometres, what was my average pace per kilometre?

A marathon is also 26.2 miles. What was my average pace per mile?

A cross country loop is approximately 1.2 kilometres. How many loops make up a marathon?

What pace would I hold for each of those x-country loops?

See you all on Wednesday. Ratio, rate and Proportion Test on Friday or Monday depending on interruptions.

Ratio Rate and Proportion Post

Welcome to your blogs.  Your first post will be a wrap up of your proportion unit.  You need to have a review of all the work you have done.  None of this will be new.  Consider it the first chapter in your exam review!! Yep I said the "E" word EXAM!! It will also remind you of all the fantastic things you can do to make a blog post pop instead of being boring.

Setting up the post
Title your post _______'s Proportion Post
Label your post username817 (Bif817, Mortimer814 etc) and proportion post (two words lower case)

In the body of your post please include the following parts:

Part 1

Please define
  • ratio
  • rate
  • proportion
Good definitions have pictures, words and examples.

Part 2
Copy these questions into your post.  Answer them using proportion statements.
  1. 5 hours to travel 360 kilometers is about _____km/h.
  2. Emma saves 28 cents of every dollar that she earns.  Emma earned $75 last week.  How much money did Emma save last week?
Part 3
What are the three ways you can prove that equivalent ratio statements are true?
3/4 = 12/16  or 4/9 = 16/32

Part 4
Find a video about using proportion and embed it in your post.  Make sure you select the small size of the video. (Bonus Marks if you make your own video about proportion and embed it)

Task 5

We are starting to engage in discussions about social justice.  What do you think about this image below.  Use the link to copy it into your post.  Then answer the questions

  1. Does this seem fair?
  2. With what you know about proportion look and read what is in the image above.  Does it seem just and fair?
  3. Why have you made this choice?
  4. What would you have done if you were the judge?

Due Date Friday October 14th

Monday Proportion Homework

Here is your warm up and Proportion Questions.  Please solve each question 2 different ways.  Do not forget Manga High and your first blog post will be posted tomorrow.

Today in class we did some practice work for our test tomorrow.  If you use a word ratio the questions fall into place and are simpler.  Practice Practice Practice.  Here is the link to the page you need to download the questions.  They are circled in red in the image below.

    X-country running

We have done many classes on running.  We are winding this unit down over the next two weeks.  One of my objectives was to see how far the Cross Country Team could run during their season.  Working on this will be our questions today.
How far have runners trained in your room since the beginning of the year?
How far have runners trained in Grade 8?
How far have runners trained in Grade 7?
How far have runners trained in Grade 9?
How many total kilometers have all the runners run since the beginning of the training season?

Where is Auburn Ontario? How far is it from Winnipeg to Auburn?
Where is Bellville Ontario? How far is it from Winnipeg to Bellville?
Once you have collected your data you need to write the following:
    • 6 part to part ratios
    • 3 3 part ratios
    • 6 part to whole ratios
    • 6 part to part to whole ratios
Here is a video on Ratios.

Here is your homework for the long weekend.  Do the homework book pages 12,13,14,15 and the following two questions.

How do we check these proportion statements to see that they are correct.
Also using your running and walking 10 m information do the following work.
    Comments at the blog please.

Today in the hall we walked, ran and jogged 10m.  For each event you recorded a time.  Using  that time predict your finish times for the following distances.

You should be calculating your answer 2 different ways.  Wow that is 24 proportion statements and calculation..... Good thing it is raining outside!!!!!!!!!

What is your running stride length?

    Syncro Stride

Last class we calculated our walking stride length.  Today we need to calculate our running or jogging stride length.  Here is your assignment.

    1. What is your walking stride length?(size of one walking step)
    2. What is your jogging stride length? (size of one jogging step)
    3. How many strides does it take to walk 100 m?
    4. How many strides does it take to jog 100 m?
    5. How many strides does it take to run 100m?
How many strides does Usain Bolt take to run this race? What was his average stride length?

All questions need to be answered using a proportional statement.  Please include a word ratio and the appropriate math work.

    Good luck.

What is your walking stride length?

Today in class we learned about proportional statement.  In each statement you needed 2 equivalent fractions (ratios).  You showed how to prove they were equivalent 2 different ways.

Using the information from today's class please figure out the length of just one stride or stride length.
Remember that there are 80 squares in the sidewalk, each square is 145 cm  and the total sidewalk is 11600 cm.

You counted your number of steps or strides, you know how long the sidewalk is so.... how far is one stride or your stride length ?

Please leave your answer in the comments below this blog post and in your notebook:)

OMG the Second Term has arrived!! and so have the Aliens

Welcome to the first blog post of the second term.  It will serve as your wrap up of chapter 2 in the textbook.

    Proportion and Ratio and Rate

An alien has landed from another planet.  He is a scout for his planet.  They plan on taking over the earth.

cc licensed flickr photo shared by kenyee

His computer will send a signal back to his home planet unless you type in how to solve 3 proportional reasoning questions.

To help you out use 3 problems from pages 67, 68 or 69 in your textbook.

You need to explain how you solved the questions using pictures and diagrams (show the ratio tables or equivalent fractions you used).

    The assignment one more time.

    1. title it How I stopped an Alien Invasion using  Proportion  (make a better title if you want)
    2. Label it alienstory, proportion
    3. Include 3 problems from pages67, 68, 69 in your textbook.
    4. Have fun creating a great story but it is secondary to the math knowledge you need to show.
    5. If you want to include pictures you can use this site to look for interesting images.  Remember when you use images to cite them properly and only use images you are allowed to. (cc or creative commons)
    6. Flickrcc or you can try compfight but make sure you have the creative commons search on.

Have fun finding pictures that make your story better.  Some of the best searches happen when you search for pictures of adjectives or adverbs.

    This is due Monday.
