Terry Fox Math

October 8, 2005 - Terry Fox Statue

We have a Terry Fox Run on Friday before our Welcome Back Day.  Here is a video about a young adult who has cancer.  This is why we are raising funds on Friday.

Here is some information taken from the Terry Fox Foundation Website

In 1980, when Terry Fox decided to run across Canada on a prosthetic leg to raise funds for cancer research, he knew he faced an immense challenge. After running an average of a marathon a day for 143 days, Terry was forced to stop when cancer recurred in his lungs. His Marathon of Hope came to an end but the spark he had lit in the hearts and minds of Canadians ignited into a cancer crusade that has lasted more than three decades.
Your math for today involves 2 questions.
  1. How far did Terry Fox Run in 1980?(Set up a proportional statement)
  2. If he had stayed healthy and maintained his rate of a marathon a day, how many days would it have taken him to travel across the country? (Set up a proportional statement)
  3. To date in the 31 years after Terry's tragic death his runs have raised $550 million dollars.  How much do they raise annually? (Set up a proportional statement.)
Please leave your answers behind in a comment and in your math notebooks.
