Pythagorean Relationship Scavenger Hunt

Welcome to the next Unit in Math. Pythagoras. This is an introductory scavenger hunt that will introduce you to what you will be learning.
This assignment is to be done quietly. You will receive inclass deductions if you are too loud or off task.

A) Set up Instructions

Fold a piece of in to quarters (hamburger hotdog folds)
Put your name and room number in the upper left quadrant.
Put Pythagoras Scavenger hunt in the upper right quadrant.

B) Upper Left Quadrant

Define a Right Triangle (text book). Explain what the legs and hypotenuse are.

C) Upper and lower Right Quadrants

Define the Pythagorean Relationship. (textbook)
Use the grid paper provide to draw a right triangle with sides that measure 3cm, 4cm and 5 cm. Label the legs side a and b. Label the hypotenuse side c. Cut this triangle off of the grid paper and relabel the side lengths if you have cut them out.
Create 3 squares on your grid paper.

One square has an area of 9 squares
One square has an area of 16 squares
One square has an area of 25 squares
Lightly colour each one a different colour

Using glue stick can you use the three squares and the right triangle to explain the Pythagorean relationship. a2 + b2 = c2

D) Lower Left Quadrant

Use the following numbers and shapes to explain the Pythagorean Relationship.
Draw a right Triangle
Attach 3 squares to each of the sides of the right triangle.
Now place the following labels and numbers into the diagram (it does not need to be to scale)

side a, side b, side c, hypotenuse,
a2, b2, c2
8 cm, 10 cm, 6 cm
100 cm2, 36 cm2, 64 cm2

c)Create a quick method for determining mentally if the numbers are perfect squares.
d)Use this method to determine if 1 000 000 000 is a perfect square.

5. Determine the square root of 6400, 640 000, 64 000 000.
a) Describe a quick method for determining mentally the square root each number above.
b) Explain why this method does not work for evaluating the square root of 640.
What is the square toot of 640 000 000 000. How did you find your answer.

Halloween for Hunger... The Results

Today is November 1st and the students have returned from Halloween for Hunger. Over half of the students participated. I am very impressed. These students decided to forgo candy at houses to ask for donations to Winnipeg Harvest. We have great kids. One of their comments this morning was...
"The people in the neighborhood were all saying WE LOVE Sargent Park Kids". Well so do I.

I set the bar high when I asked these students to participate. I asked them to try to get 1400 items for harvest. They almost made this goal. They brought in 1281 items for Winnipeg Harvest. It is all sitting in my computer lab. Tomorrow we will package it up and send it up the street to the food bank.

Way to go Sargent Park. You are truly amazing. Great group of kids and fantastic team of teachers pushing you to bigger and better things. Keep it up... soon we will be doing more great things.

You need to use 3 different number lines. One will have an interval of 2, one an interval of 5 and one an interval of 10. We have a Terry Fox Run on Friday before our Welcome Back Day. Here is a video about a young adult who has cancer. This is why we are raising funds on Friday.

Here is some information taken from the Terry Fox Foundation Website

In 1980, when Terry Fox decided to run across Canada on a prosthetic leg to raise funds for cancer research, he knew he faced an immense challenge. After running an average of a marathon a day for 143 days, Terry was forced to stop when cancer recurred in his lungs. His Marathon of Hope came to an end but the spark he had lit in the hearts and minds of Canadians ignited into a cancer crusade that has lasted more than three decades.

Your math for today involves 2 questions.

How far did Terry Fox Run in 1980?(Set up a proportional statement)
If he had stayed healthy and maintained his rate of a marathon a day, how many days would it have taken him to travel across the country? (Set up a proportional statement)

Today in class we learned about proportional statement. In each statement you needed 2 equivalent fractions (ratios). You showed how to prove they were equivalent 2 different ways.

Using the information from today's class please figure out the length of just one stride or stride length.

Remember that there are 80 squares in the sidewalk, each square is 145 cm and the total sidewalk is 11600 cm.

You counted your number of steps or strides, you know how long the sidewalk is so.... how far is one stride or your stride length ?

Manitoba Marathon Details

Hey everyone here is the information for the students running the Manitoba Marathon on Sunday June 19th. The first spread sheet is the times I expect you to run and when you need to be at your relay station.

This spread sheet is for students needing rides to the relay exchange stations.

Here is the site for the Manitoba Marathon. It has many useful sections about getting to your relay exchange on time.

Winning Boys Junior High time last year was 3:15 and for the Girls it was 3:42. More than one team are ready to run faster than these times. Good luck on race day. Do not forget your number!! Plan ahead. Drive to your relay exchange and expect delays due to traffic changes in the city.

Here is the note I sent home to your parents if you lost it

Dear Parents

The time has come. Friday will be our last official practice. The students have attended many 7:30 and 8:00 practices. All of them are ready to do the relay on Sunday June 19th. They have done their part now it is your turn to help out. Students will be bringing home a bag of goodies today. In this bag you will find:

Marathon information booklet
Marathon Spreadsheet
Their Race Number
4 pins

All of this material is important for next Sunday. Please take time to read the Marathon Information Booklet. There is valuable information about everything you might be curious about for the race on Sunday. Some pages to pay attention to are:

Page 18 if you are running the first or last legs of the relay. Great info about parking
Page 25 a full map of the race course and where all the exchange points are
Pages 33 to 35 are full of relay race information from parking to helpful hints

Please read this book.

I have provided you with a marathon spreadsheet. This shows all the teams participating in the relay this year. The spreadsheet has be created using estimated times from practice runs. It is not totally accurate. I have erred on the side of estimating too fast. This means that for some of the later runners I may be out by up to 20 minutes. Expect to be at your relay check point for up to an hour before some runners arrive. Times will change due to weather conditions and because of injuries to runners. I have provided you with:

time to arrive at the exchange point
estimated time to complete the relay section
arrival time at the next exchange point

Please make sure to arrive at the right time. You will have difficulty finding parking and getting to the exchange zones. It is a good idea to scout out routes ahead of time. Please be prepared. Being on time is so important. If you do not show up and a runner has no one to pass the chip to the race is ruined for the other 4 athletes.

Each student gets a relay number our numbers are 5786 TO 5794. This number must be worn on the front of the shirt. The four pins in the kit are to fasten the number to the shirt. If a student is also running the half, both numbers must be worn. At the relay exchange zones there are sign posts with numbers. Stand in between the sign posts that are appropriate (i.e. 5600-5700). The runners will exchange the chip and look for each other in these numerical zones. ***** All runners must wear the relay exchange number attached to the belt at all times. This is how we are timed and scored. We will not get a time if this belt is not worn by all students*****

Thank you for allowing your child to participate. The goal of this club is to develop life long runners. All the students are amazing. So here are my last few pieces of advice:

Please wake up your child with plenty of time to get to the race. It is on Sunday and they will need lots of encouragement to wake up!
Feed them food but not too much food. A bowl of oatmeal and bananas would be plenty for what they need to do. There are snacks and drinks on the course.
Know where the exchange point is. Getting their on time is very important. The whole relay team is counting on you.
If you are picking up other students or getting picked up, please know the phone numbers of all people concerned.
Most of all enjoy the experience with them. They have worked so hard and come so far. Share their accomplishment.

This has been a remarkable season. Over 50 athletes trained and 45 are participating on Marathon Sunday. We will be the largest Junior High team in the province. Congratulations and thanks again. Do not hesitate to call me at the school or email me. I will get back to you as fast as I can.

Where are you going to put all of this media?

For all of your pictures place them at your google document.

You will create a slide called Photo Links.
Paste all links into this slide
Create another new slide and use the Copy Image Location to insert the image.
Repeat as many times as needed as you find more images.

If you are using your own images you need to store them at your google doc too. Upload them from your PC or camera to the slide. You do not need an image citation for your own photographs.

Any picture without a citation will not be allowed in your movie. Be sure to use only CC material.

Today in class we are going to experiment with audioboo. It is a free program that allows you to upload sound to any website. We are going to reflect on your second term. I want you to think for 10 minutes about this term.

I also want to to explain the difference between volume and surface area. How are they different and what do the have in common.

You need to create some jot notes in your notebook or Google Docs because you will be recording your own voice to capture this reflection.

Once you are done hit publish be be sure to have the proper tags in place. You will tag your boo with spmath, your username from blogger (Mark873) and "term 2 reflection".
You now are ready to get the embed code.

As many of you have noticed there are lots of comments at our posts. It is important to read the comments that you have received. Your classmates and people from around the world have spent time reading your post and leaving you feedback.

Blogger etiquette would have you responding to the comments you have received. A simple thanks and telling them that you have done the corrections they have suggested would be a great starting point.

There will be many questions about posting your video. Here are a few hints in getting the job done.

If you are using Windows Movie Maker you need to export it as a different file type. This link will help you out.

Signing in

use your spmathgr8 email and password to get to the Sargent Park Youtube account.

Once there click upload and find the file on your computer or drive. While the file is uploading please take time and fill out some information at youtube.

Please do not include your last names. Use your display names from blogger (Biff817).

Now back to your post.

To embed from youtube you need to get the embed code. It can be found here

Copy it to your clipboard and return to your blog post.

It is important that you are not in composer at blogger. TO paste the code in properly you need to be in edit html.

Who was in your group then...

Part 1 Definition or Ratio, Rate and Proportion with an example showing how to use it. Use your pink paper to help you. These definition and examples will be part of your video. Remember when you rewrite the script to the video or song please add the definition of Ratio Rate and Proportional Reasoning.
Part 2 You need to embed the video from Sesame Street into your post. To do that you need to go to youtube, search for the title of your Sesame Street video found at sesamestreet.org. If you cannot find it at youtube please leave the link to the video at sesamestreet.org and a brief description. i.e. The Count is counting different speeds on the speedometer etc
Part 3 Embed your video in your post. Upload your video to youtube. We have a youtube channel. To upload go to youtube and sign in a spmathgr8@gmail.com. Your password is the same one we always use for math projects. There will be a second post on what to do at youtube.

Sesame Street Rocks

Yesterday someone sent me a Sesame Street video. It wasn't this video but I saw but it peaked my interest...

How can we use videos found at Sesame Street to show our learning. Simple we are going to rewrite them!!!

Yes I said rewrite.

Your assignment is to choose a video from Sesame Street and rewrite to have a theme of either Ratio, Rate or Proportional Reasoning. In the video above imagine Ernie is being hussled to buy a ratio. You could show lots of different examples of ratio and explain what it is. When Ernie is broke at the end and tells the hussler he bought 9's you could have bought rates. Ernie would then give multiple examples of rates.

The possibilities are endless.

Homework for Tuesday

Choose a group (up to 3 people and one person should have access to a camera)
Choose a video from Sesame Street. Any video will do BUT you must rewrite it using Ratio Rate and Proportional Reasoning.

This would be my Math Profile.

Hi there my name is Chris. I am a math student in Grade 8. If someone asked me if I liked math I would say yes it is a subject I like to take. I am not the strongest student but I love figuring out puzzles and playing with numbers. I remember a time in Grade 4 when we got to talk about fractions and submarine sandwiches. This was an activity that really was fun to do. When we were finished we got to eat the sandwiches. That is math that I really like. Yumm

In Grade 7 I really liked the unit on Integers. I remember all about positive and negative numbers. We were using bingo chips to talk about zero pairs. I also remember struggling with fractions. Trying to figure out the difference between improper fractions and mixed numbers really frustrated me. Last year I did not do all of my homework. This year to be successful I will use the blog and complete all of my homework.

This is now Grade 8. I know that finishing all of my homework and using the blog and my friends to help me finish my questions will make me a better student. I am looking forward to learning Algebra and want to be ready for grade 9.

I was a blogger last year. One post I did was all about getting ready for the final exam. I am really proud of this post because I included a video, had images and explained the topic well. Many of my classmates commented on my post. I feel great when I receive many comments. This year I am looking forward to making my own math movies and working on 2 Minutes to Make a Difference.
